Information & Content

You need to decide how much or how little information you want to give people. A good designer can put this into an easy and logical syntax. Think about your existing clients, what sort of questions have they had about your product or service?

Simplicity is the key! Everything should be easy on the eyes and easy to find, especially your contact information!

Layout, Flow & Composition

First impressions count!

Generally speaking, in the western world, we are used to reading things from left to right, and top to bottom. This important design element is taken into account in all forms of print and digital media. Of course, there are always exceptions to this rule and a good designer should be able to “think outside of the box”

When your web page opens what is the first thing that catches your eye? What information do you see first and last? Do the graphical elements on the page balance out the textual elements?

Ultimately, every page of your site should be easy to look at and navigate through.. Too much can be overwhelming or confusing.

Colour & Contrast

What stands out?

Is it easy to see and read?

You may have already decided on colours for your business. If so, these could be repeated through out your site. If this is not the case, you may like to think about what colours best represent the feel of your business. ie: Bright, vibrant, energetic colours. Bold, sophisticated, corporate colours. Calm, cool, peaceful colours.

You could choose several colours that look great together, or one colour with several shades or textures. Or maybe black and white is appropriate for your website.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista, etc, do not automatically index all webpages. Web designers have ways of ensuring that your site is noticed by the search engines. This is arguably, the most important aspect of a websites design and code. What is the point of having a website if nobody can find it?

Search Engines have programmes (called robots) that are automated to run around the world wide web via links on other web pages. When they find a new page, they scan a copy of it for their cache and index the url. It can sometimes take up to two or three weeks for a 'robot' to find your new site, depending on how many other pages have placed links to your site. This is why it is a good idea to submit your url to popular directory sites, the more the better!

Once a your site has been indexed, it will then be listed with relevant searches based on keywords either in the meta-tags in the code, or keywords in the content of the site. Different search engines place different degrees of importance on each element of the site, eg, text, headings, alt tags etc.
